The Union's three year contract was going to be terminated in 1892. Steel workers had a contract scale wage based on the price of 4x4 standard Bessemer steel billers. The company demanded wage cuts for 325 employees. Carnegie was determined to cut its cost of production beacuse he wanted to break the union. Andrew Carnegie often communicated with union sympathies, went to Scotland leaving Henry Clay Flick in charge. Union fought for say in America's new industrial order but Carnegie refused to share control of the company.
